A water storage tank stores clean water from your reverse osmosis system or another filtration system until you want to use it. Pressurized storage tanks release water on demand, while atmospheric tanks require a booster pump to create pressure. Water storage tanks are available in a wide range of sizes, designs, and specifications and can be used in residential, commercial, large industrial, or municipal applications.

What is a water storage tank?

A water storage tank collects and stores water for later use. When you turn on your kitchen faucet, water from the tank is delivered to your faucet, providing you with fresh water when needed. Reverse osmosis systems work slowly, purifying water drop by drop. A reverse osmosis storage tank ensures you can access this water whenever needed without waiting for the system to refill your glass laboriously. Many wells have low pressure and low recovery and are tasked with supplying pressurized water to the entire household or business. A well-pressure tank ensures that you have immediate access to pressurized water when you turn on the shower or flush the toilet. They also help your well pump last longer by protecting it from short circuits.

How do pressure tanks work?

Compressed air is used in pressure tanks to create water pressure in the tank. A pressure tank consists of an air chamber or bladder and has a pressure bias. As the tank fills with water, the weight of the water begins to compress the air. As the air continues to compress, the pressure in the tank builds. When the tank reaches a certain internal pressure, it signals the supply source to stop pumping.

When you turn on a kitchen faucet, air pressure pushes on the water coming out of the tank, forcing it under pressure through the pipes and out the sink. As the water exits the tank, the air begins to expand again, lowering the pressure in the tank and signalling the water source to resume pumping.

When the pressure tank is used to store well water, this means that the tank is signalling the well pump to turn back on. If the storage tank is collecting water for reverse osmosis, lowering the pressure signals the reverse osmosis system to resume production. These tanks are known as hydropneumatic tanks because they use the combined force of water and air to create pressure in a tank.

How do atmospheric tanks work?

Atmospheric tanks do not contain air bubbles or membranes that pressurize the water in their tanks. Instead, atmospheric tanks hold water at ambient pressure. Ambient pressure is simply the pressure that exists in the location where the tank is located (usually about 0.5 psi), and no pressure is applied to the water in the tank. Atmospheric tanks can also be used to store liquids such as crude oil, and some can also hold chemicals and acids. In the Underground Water Tanks Virar-Vasai, for example, the gasoline is under atmospheric pressure.

Why are water storage tanks elevated?

Atmospheric water storage tanks are elevated to help them generate water pressure. If a water reservoir is elevated high enough, gravity alone can generate water pressure equivalent to that of large booster pumps. Municipal water towers, for example, operate on this principle. Water is pumped up into the water tower and held there until a demand is created.

When you turn on your faucet, the water tower's height allows it to deliver high-pressure water to your house. Water towers are usually about 165 feet high. For every foot the water flows down, it picks up about 0.43 psi of pressure, which means the water will reach your showerhead and kitchen faucet at between 50 and 100 psi.
